Introduction
There's four filming locations then and now Quick Preview Videos in the spotlight this month, each focusing on a different part of the Los Angeles area from 1928 through 1935.
We get things rolling with Hoi Polloi, a classic 1935 comedy from The Three Stooges filmed in the Larchmont Village neighborhood. Then we head over to the Westside to meet up with the Our Gang / The Little Rascals kids and look at the filming locations used in their 1934 movie Hi'-Neighbor!.
Laurel and Hardy are up next, and we visit a filming location from their 1928 movie Their Purple Moment - a place that almost ended up getting demolished in the 1960s.
The last movie we look at this month - Midsummer Mush starring Charley Chase takes us to a 1933 filming location that unfortunately was recently demolished, but the then and now views of this spot are quite interesting as they show the evolution of a filming location.
The Three Stooges - Hoi Polloi (1935)
The Plot
The Three Stooges are gainfully employed(!) as refuse collectors and are going about their business when three professors spot them and offer to make them into proper gentlemen. Of course, we all know that can NOT be done!
Larchmont Village In Los Angeles In 1935
In the quick preview video of the movie locations used in the film, you'll get a then and now look at the beautiful Larchmont section of Los Angeles. Almost all the buildings seen in the movie are still standing today. The biggest change being the removal of the streetcar tracks down the middle of Larchmont Blvd and all the trees planted on both sides of the street.
The Three Stooges Meet Rudolph Valentino
The movie ends with The Stooges landing in a fountain commemorating Rudolf Valentino! This filming location is in the De Longpre Park at 1350 North Cherokee Avenue in Hollywood.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Hi'-Neighbor! (1934)
The Plot
A rich kid has just moved into the neighborhood and his shiny fire engine built for two has attracted the attention of Wally's girlfriend. Not to be outdone, Wally and the Gang build their OWN fire engine. The rich kid then challenges the Gang to a race down a very steep hill.
A Filming Location Untouched By Time
Filming Location #1: On the Westside of Los Angeles at the rich kid's house.
The house at 3510 Glendon Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles is the first filming location used in Hi'-Neighbor!. The house was built in 1932 and looks exactly the same today as when it was captured on film in 1934.
A Filming Location Lost To Development
Filming Location #2: The Hal Roach Studios ranch.
The part of the Beverlywood neighborhood to the west of Robertson Blvd bounded by Hillsboro Avenue, Canfield Avenue and West 24th Street was owned by the Hal Roach Studios from 1923 through 1940 and was a filming location for many outdoor scenes, including:
- Miss Crabtree's school house in the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies. Current members can see this filming location in the filming location videos for Teacher's Pet and Fish Hooky
- The 1929 Laurel and Hardy movie The Hoose-Gow. Available to current members of this site.
- The 1927 Charley Chase comedy A Treat For The Boys. Also available to current site members.
A Street On A Very Steep Hill
Filming Location #3: There's a quick shot of Fargo Street at North Alvarado Street - a very steep hill which is to be the place where the Gang and the rich kid race their fire engines. This filming location is in the very hilly Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The Plot
Laurel and Hardy attempt to have a night out on the town without their wives knowing, but the town gossip is on their trail!
A Laurel And Hardy Filming Location Almost Buried By A Freeway
The location scenes for this movie were filmed at 1750 West 22nd Street, built in 1923, in the West Adams district of Los Angeles. In the 1960s when the I-10 freeway was being built, we very nearly lost this location. Fortunately, the planners decided that the freeway would be built on the block across the street from the house, and this wonderful piece of film history was spared demolition in the name of "progress."

Charley Chase - Midsummer Mush (1933)
The Plot
Scoutmaster Charley Chase is leading his troop on an expedition from the bustling city out to Idyllwild. They get lost along the way and further adding to the troop's troubles, Charley has a run-in with a cop, a beautiful woman and her father and causes a massive traffic jam.
Filming Locations Very Much Changed By Time
In this Quick Preview Video, you'll see two often used intersections in various Laurel and Hardy and Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies. The first intersection is located at the intersection of Motor Avenue and Tabor Street in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Charley asks the cop for directions.
The second - which is supposed to be just a reverse angle of Charley and the cop in the first intersection - was filmed about a mile away in Culver City at the intersection of Main Street and Culver Blvd. This location appears in several films on this site, most notably Traffic Tangle.
The present-day views of both of these filming locations show the dramatic changes that have occurred - just over the past 10 years!
