Reefer Madness (1936): Exploring the Cult Classic’s Filming Locations

Reefer Madness is arguably one of the most famous cult classic movies of the 1930s. Originally produced as a cautionary tale, it has since become a pop-culture phenomenon. For film historians, the production is just as interesting as the movie itself, especially regarding where it was brought to life.

Studio Production vs. On-Location Filming

Reefer Madness was famously filmed on a very low budget. While the vast majority of the production took place within the United Artists Studios located at 1041 North Formosa Avenue in West Hollywood, California, there is one notable exception that serves as a historic time capsule.

Then and Now: High Speed Ride On Santa Monica Blvd

The production team filmed one brief but memorable scene on location, just outside the studio gates on Santa Monica Blvd.

• The Scene: Actor Warren McCollum is filmed driving a car at high speed in front of a building that was then addressed as 7291 Santa Monica Blvd.
• Architectural History: Built in 1929, the building served as a local tire shop for most of its existence.
• The Address Change: Due to a city-wide redesignation of the area, the block was renamed the "7300 block." Today, you can visit this historic building at its updated address: 7335 Santa Monica Blvd.
