Introduction
We're all over the Los Angeles area this month, looking at filming locations then and now from 1930 through the 23rd century!
Starting off, we pay a visit to the Our Gang / The Little Rascals kids to look at the filming location used in the 1938 comedy Canned Fishing. Then, we ride along with Laurel and Hardy in their 1930 movie Hog Wild.
A visit to an alien planet in the 23rd century is up next, courtesy of the 1967 episode Arena from the Star Trek TV series.
Charley Chase in his 1930 short comedy Fast Work finishes up our filming locations tour.
Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Canned Fishing (1938)
The Plot
In this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, Spanky and Alfalfa have a plan to play hooky by pretending Alfalfa is sick. Spanky volunteers to stay home from school to look after Alfalfa, but the real plan is to sneak out of the house to go fishing! Spanky's mom of course recognizes the scheme for what it is and she goes into town to run errands, leaving Spanky and Alfalfa to look after Spanky's younger brother Junior!
A Typical Suburban Back Yard As Filming Location
This is a rare Little Rascals movie made in the late 1930s that actually filmed many scenes outdoors, on location at a real house about a mile from the studio. The house at 9634 Farragut Drive in Culver City, California, was built in 1922 and still stands today, though the owners have added an addition in the backyard. The rest of the house that's seen in this movie and the alley shown in the final scene are still very much as they were back in 1938.

The Plot
Mr. Hardy is trying to install an antenna on the roof so that Mrs. Hardy can listen to radio programs from Japan! Mr. Laurel decides to "help" his friend Mr. Hardy.
A Filming Locations Tour Of The Los Angeles Area
This entertaining early Laurel and Hardy "talkie" movie was filmed at several outdoor locations in and near downtown Culver City, California and at the campus of the University of Southern California near downtown Los Angeles. The then and now views in this movie location documentary video gives us some fascinating looks at how each of these areas has evolved in the 95 years since this Laurel and Hardy movie was filmed.

Star Trek - Arena (1967)
The Plot
The U.S.S. Enterprise is pursuing a hostile alien spaceship operated by a species called "The Gorn." The pursuit takes them into a solar system inhabited by a peaceful race who stops the violence and beams Captain Kirk and the Captain of the Gorn ship to a desolate planet where they can settle their dispute directly.
An Iconic Filming Location
This episode from Season 1 of the original series was filmed at Los Angeles County's Vasquez Rocks Natural Area park, a place that truly does look like it could be another planet! The area is about a 45 minute drive from downtown Los Angeles and has been a favorite filming location for 100 years. Dozens (and dozens!) of movies, TV shows and music videos have used this location and its iconic rock formations as a setting. As you'll see in this then and now film location video, not much has changed since Captain Kirk visited.

Charley Chase - Fast Work (1930)
The Plot
Charley Chase falls in love with beautiful June Marlowe ("Miss Crabtree" from the Our Gang / The Little Rascals series), but she refuses to go on a date with him unless he first gets permission from her father. Things get complicated when Charley mistakes an escaped lunatic for her father!
Filming Locations As Time Capsules
The complete movie location then and now documentary video on this film starts out at the same mansion location in the West Adams Historic District that the Laurel and Hardy movie Another Fine Mess used (Another Fine Mess was also made in 1930). Perhaps the studio decided to film at this mansion location because it had already been rented out to Laurel and Hardy to shoot their scenes?
Later, the action shifts outside of an apartment building that is unchanged in the 95 years since this movie was made, though today the building looks rather tired. We can only hope this historic filming location will stand for another 95 years.
