Introduction
Our tour of historic Los Angeles area filming locations focuses on three films:
- The Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, Boxing Gloves
- Laurel and Hardy on the streets of the Westside of Los Angeles selling Christmas trees in the movie Big Business
- An early "talkie" comedy movie starring Nat Carr, Traffic Tangle filmed completely on location in Culver City, California

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Boxing Gloves (1929)
The Plot
Joe and Chubby are vying for the affections of pretty Jean Darling. Each tries to buy her a bottle of soda pop but complications arise!
The Filming Location: The Palms Neighborhood Of Los Angeles
This Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie made use of a filming location that appeared in dozens of films in the series: the corner of Motor Avenue at Woodbine Street in the Palms neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles.
In the filming location then and now comparison photo above, Joe and Chubby are about to come to blows in front of the landmark 3392 Motor Avenue building. This building appears in quite a few of the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies from the 1920s through the early 1930s. Today, it still stands, though the brickwork has been covered in an ugly layer of stucco.

Laurel and Hardy - Big Business (1929)
The Plot
It's the holiday season and Laurel and Hardy are in "Big Business!" selling Christmas trees door-to-door - with predictable disastrous results!
An Ordinary Home Made Famous As A Filming Location
This film was shot entirely on the streets of Culver City, California and the nearby Cheviot Hills section of Los Angeles. Fortunately (amazingly as of this writing!) the homes at each movie location used for the film are still standing and almost completely unchanged since 1929.
Update: 2025
Unfortunately, the home seen early in the movie at the corner of Jacob Street and Caroline Avenue has been demolished, however the house seen in the filming location then and now comparison photo above at 10281 Dunleer Drive in the Cheviot Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles is still standing.

Nat Carr - Traffic Tangle (1930)
The Plot
Besides the Hal Roach Studios (which brought us the films of Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang / The Little Rascals, Harold Lloyd and many other classic comedians), there was another studio in Culver City, California that created a series of comedy films in the 1920s/30s: Pathe.
This film is an early Pathe "talkie" comedy short that has a very basic premise: A man buys a new car and tries to take his family out for a drive but instead ends up causing a huge traffic jam. The local traffic cop is not amused.
A Visit To A Downtown Culver City Filming Location
The then and now filming location photo above shows Nat Carr and his family having caused a huge traffic jam at the intersection of Main Street and Culver Blvd. The view is looking up Main Street towards Venice Blvd in the distance. Amazingly, every building seen in the image from the movie is still standing today!

The Plot
After the traffic cop decides to write Nat Carr a ticket for causing the traffic jam, he realizes he left his ticket book at home. He gets in the car and has Nat drive him to his house so he can pick it up!
