Major Changes To A Culver City Street

Question: Early in the 1979 Charlie's Angels episode Angels On The Street, there is a scene of the music teacher's daughter walking down the street with the store "Mark The Carpetbagger" in the background. Where is this filming location?

Answer: The scene was filmed on Main Street in Culver City, California between Washington Blvd and Culver Blvd. The photo above shows the major changes to this filming location then and now.

This then and now filming location photo comparison above shows the Main Street entrance to the old Adams Hotel on the left. The view is looking towards Washington Blvd with 9412 Washington Blvd's "Mark The Carpetbagger" seen in the background.

Both of these buildings date back to the earliest days of Culver City and have appeared in dozens and dozens of movie and TV episodes from the 1920s through the late 1980s.

Sadly, everything on the Adams Hotel block was demolished in the late 1980s. A parking lot occupied the entire block until the 2010s when the massive Culver Steps development was built.

The "Mark The Carpetbagger" building at 9412 Washington Blvd has fared much better over the past 100 years. While the front has been extensively remodeled, it is in fact the same building that appears in several of the silent films of Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang / The Little Rascals and many other comedies made in the 1920s, along with several episodes of the TV series CHiPs in the 1970s and Hunter in the 1980s.

1924 vs 1979!

Question: There's also a scene in the 1979 Charlie's Angels episode Angels On The Street where the Angels confront the pimp who is controlling the neighborhood. Where is this filming location?

Answer: This scene was also filmed on Main Street in Culver City between Washington Blvd and Culver Blvd. This filming location appeared in many movies from the 1920s and the filming location photo above shows this filming location comparing the 1920s to the 1970s.

The filming location comparison photo above shows a similar view of 9412 Washington Blvd from the Main Street entrance of the Adams Hotel. The top photo is from the 1924 Our Gang / The Little Rascals film The Sun Down Limited.

When this Charlie's Angels episode was filmed in 1979, the front of 9412 Washington Blvd was pretty much the same as it was in 1924, unlike today where most of the front of the building is walled off.

Urban Renewal Claims An Entire Block

Question: Where did they film the scene of the pimp beating up the prostitute in the Charlie's Angeles episode Angels on the Street?

Answer: This scene was filmed in front of 9412 Washington Blvd in Culver City.

The filming location then and now photo above gives us a rare view of the 9300 block of Washington Blvd. In the frame from the episode at the top of the photo, we can see the Adams Hotel across the street. And in the view from today, not only is the Adams Hotel gone, but so is this part of Washington Blvd!

Today, the Culver Steps development occupies the entire block and Washington Blvd is now routed one block north onto Culver Blvd as it travels through downtown Culver City.

The view is looking north from in front of 9412 Washington Blvd.

A Culver City Landmark

The Culver Hotel - Seen In Dozens Of Films And TV Episodes

Question: Where did they film the scene of Bosley pulling a gun on the pimp's henchman in the Charlie's Angels episode Angels on the Street?

Answer: The scene was filmed in front of the Washington Blvd side of the Culver Hotel in Culver City, California. The photo above shows the filming location then and now.

The Washington Blvd side of the Culver Hotel is clearly visible in the photo above. Now that the "urban renewal" of the area is complete, this section of Washington Blvd is part of the pedestrian mall that starts up at Ince Blvd and extends down to the "X" where Washington and Culver Blvd separate again as they head west.

The hotel appears in literally dozens of movies and TV episodes, going back to the time when it was under construction in 1923, including:

• Glenn Tryon - 45 Minutes From Hollywood (1926)
• Laurel and Hardy - Putting Pants On Philip (1927)
• Laurel and Hardy - We Faw Down (1928)
• Max Davidson - The Boy Friend (1928)
• Hunter - Scrap Metal (1986)

Question: Where did they film the scene of the pimp's car pulling up in front of the stores in the Charlie's Angeles episode Angels on the Street?

Answer: The scene was filmed on the south side of the 9300 block of Culver Blvd in Culver City.

Two features from the earliest days of Culver City are seen in both of these photos above:

• Media Park (the group of trees at top left)
• The old Pacific Electric Railway Ivy sub-station (now home of The Actor's Gang) at 9070 Venice Blvd.

If you look closely at the top photo, you can see cars parked in the MIDDLE of Culver Blvd. That parking area used to be the right of way of the Pacific Electric Railway tracks that ran down the middle of Culver Blvd.

Guest Starring - The Culver Hotel

The Culver Hotel Makes Another Appearance!

Once more, this Charlie's Angels episode intersects with the Laurel and Hardy 1928 film We Faw Down. Laurel and Hardy are standing on Van Buren Place with the Washington Blvd side of the Culver Hotel visible in the background. We get to see the same side of the hotel 50 years later at the bottom of the photo as it appeared in Angels On The Street.
