Introduction
This month, we're touring filming locations from three movies made in 1929 and 1930, when the motion picture industry was transitioning from silent movie to "talking" pictures:
- Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Boxing Gloves (1929) - An early "talkie" in the series.
- Laurel and Hardy - Big Business (1929) - Their classic "selling Christmas trees door-to-door" comedy.
- Nat Carr - Traffic Tangle (1930) - A "time capsule" of a movie - filmed entirely on the streets of Culver City, California.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Boxing Gloves (1929)
The Plot
In this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, Joe and Chubby are trying to win the affections of Jean Darling. Each tries to woo her by buying her a soda. Joe and Chubby almost get into a fist fight, and the two "real fightin' men" are spotted by local fight "promoters" Farina and Harry who convince them to participate in boxing match they're putting on for the neighborhood kids.
A Favorite Our Gang / The Little Rascals Filming Location
The "soda pop scene" was filmed at a very heavily used Little Rascals movie location: Woodbine Street next to 3392 Motor Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. Both 3392 Motor Avenue (which still stands today) and 3402 Motor Avenue (sadly replaced with the building that occupies the site today) appear in the film.

Two Homes That Have Become World Famous Filming Locations
Our filming locations then and now tour takes us to two of the filming locations, each of which is - as of this writing - still standing today:
Update: The house at 3404 Caroline Avenue has just been reported as sold as of November 21, 2024. The sale price was $1.3 million.

Nat Carr - Traffic Tangle (1930) - Part 1
The Plot
Nat Carr buys a new car and attempts to take his family out for a ride, but has a run-in with a traffic cop.
Filming Location Time Capsule - Downtown Culver City 1930 vs Today
Every part of Traffic Tangle was filmed in and around downtown Culver City, California. The intersection of Main Street and Culver Blvd serves as the location for the run-in with the traffic cop, just as it did in several comedy films made prior to this one, most notably the Laurel and Hardy 1928 film Leave 'Em Laughing.
Looking Main Street towards Venice Blvd, every building captured on film in 1930 is still standing today. However, the reverse angle views of Main Street looking towards Washington Blvd show major changes, mostly as a result of the massive Culver Steps underground parking garage being built in the 2010s.

The Plot
The traffic cop that we saw in Part 1 is about to write Nat Carr a traffic ticket, but he realizes he left his ticket book at home. He has Nat drive him to his house so he can pick up the ticket book!
A Real-Life Culver City Home Used As Filming Location
The 9000 block of Carson Street served as the filming location for this part of Traffic Tangle. The traffic cop's home looks exactly the same today as it did in 1930. In addition, the other homes on the block that we see in the movie are all still standing too!
