Steve Martin - L.A. Story (1991)
The Plot
The 1991 Steve Martin movie L.A. Story is a wonderful satire on the well-to-do culture that was present in Los Angeles in the 1980s and 1990s. Steve Martin plays a local TV weatherman going through a mid-life crisis and he ends up dating a much younger woman (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) who lives in bohemian Venice Beach.
Historic Venice Beach As Filming Location
The filming location then and now photo above is of the west side of 23 Windward Avenue, right across from the beach.
The History Of 23 Windward Avenue
This building has the distinction of being one of the few remaining original buildings in the area, dating back to when developer Abbot Kinney purchased the swampland that we know today as the Venice Beach neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The building dates back to 1905 and retains it's original architectural arch features on the Windward Avenue side.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Your Own Back Yard (1925)
The Plot
Farina is on the outs with the Gang, so he and his pet lamb wander around the neighborhood to amuse themselves.
Filmed Entirely On Location
This 1925 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, Your Own Back Yard is notable for two reasons:
- Allen 'Farina' Hoskins carries almost the entire film - at just 5 years of age!
- The film's abundant use of on location filming is today viewed as an invaluable time capsule of both the Palms neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles and the early days of nearby Culver City.
A Familiar Intersection
In the then and now filming location photo above, we see Mickey Daniels, having just schemed Farina out of an ice cream cone.
The building in the background is 3392 Motor Avenue, at the corner of Motor and Woodbine Street, built in 1910 and still standing today.

The Plot
The story continues with Farina and his pet lamb reaching a busy part of town.
A 360 Degree View Of 1925 Downtown Culver City
About halfway through Your Own Back Yard, there's a scene where Farina and his pet lamb get stuck in a revolving door. After several revolutions they finally emerge and wander out into the middle of the street, extremely dizzy!
The filmmakers conveyed Farina's dizziness by an ingenious scene where we see Farina and his lamb standing in the middle of the intersection of Culver Blvd and Main Street in Culver City while the camera revolves around 360 degrees, giving us amazing views of this historic intersection as it looked in 1925.
There's plenty of local landmarks to see including:
- The Culver Hotel
- The Adams Hotel (now replaced by the Culver Steps development)
- Pacific Electric Railway tracks running down the middle of Culver Blvd
- The 3800 block of Main Street between Culver Blvd and Venice Blvd

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Your Own Back Yard (1925)
The Plot
Just as Farina has recovered from his dizzy spell, he wanders over to the sidewalk where another neighborhood kid starts teasing him.
Apparently while he was stuck in the revolving door, a piece of his pants got caught on the door and the threads holding his pants up were completely unraveled!
The Street That No Longer Exists
The then and now filming location above shows Farina at the Van Buren Place side of 9426 Washington Blvd. This building is one of the oldest still standing in Culver City, built in 1921. It started out as a bank (as shown in the frame from the movie) and in more recent years has been occupied by several different shops, along with periods of vacancy between tenants.
When Culver City underwent it's first phase of urban renewal in the early 2000s, this block of Van Buren Place was closed to traffic and became part of the pedestrian mall that extended to the Washington Blvd side of the block as well.
