Introduction
The first stop on this month's filming locations then and now tour takes us to... The Twilight Zone and the classic 1964 episode You Drive. After that, we'll meet up with Laurel and Hardy on location in the historic West Adams Historic Distric of Los Angeles in their 1930 movie Another Fine Mess.
Filming locations from the 1930 Our Gang / The Little Rascals comedy Pups Is Pups is up next, followed by a 1928 Max Davidson silent comedy, Dumb Daddies filmed in downtown Culver City, California.

The Twilight Zone - You Drive (1964)
The Plot
A story of a man who runs over a kid on a bicycle and flees the scene in his car. The car, though, has a conscience and follows him as he walks around the neighborhood, finally breaking him down to the point where he gets in the car and the car drives him to the police station.
A Quiet Culver City Neighborhood As Filming Location
Who knew that the twilight zone was located in... Culver City, California?!
For this episode, the crew ventured out into the residential neighborhood adjacent to MGM Studios (which is where the series was shot) to film. There's quite a few scene shot on location at Carlson Park in addition to the streets surrounding the park.
Aside from there being more trees lining the streets, the houses seen in the episode remain today and are basically unchanged since late 1963.

Laurel and Hardy - Another Nice Mess (1930)
The Plot
Laurel and Hardy are hiding out in an unoccupied mansion (the owner has just left for South Africa) when two people come to inquire about renting out the place. Laurel poses as both the butler and maid and Hardy dresses as the owner in an attempt to dissuade them from renting the place.
Los Angeles West Adams Historic District As Filming Location
This quick preview excerpt from the complete then and now filming locations video documentary picks up when the real owner unexpectedly returns (he forgot to pack something) and Laurel and Hardy flee the mansion disguised as a large goat (it makes sense if you watch the full video!).
We pick up the action at the beautiful mansion at 3500 West Adams Blvd and then proceed down to look at filming locations on the 2400 block of Fifth Avenue.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Pups Is Pups (1930)
The Plot
Wheezer's puppies have run away and he tries to get them to come back by ringing a bell (they're trained to come to Wheezer when they hear a bell). However, as the puppies roam the area, they hear all kinds of bells and the film takes us on a journey with the puppies through 1930 Los Angeles until the puppies are finally reunited with Wheezer at a church, having been drawn there by the ringing of the church bells.
Los Angeles Filming Locations Revealed
For a film made purely for entertainment, Pups Is Pups serves as a fascinating time capsule of life almost a century ago. In the complete filming locations video, you'll see steam engines, vintage late 1920s cars and the very large natural gas storage tanks that used to be located just east of downtown Los Angeles.
This Quick Preview video excerpt gives a brief view of the industrial area near the gas storage tanks as well as the St. Brendan Church in Los Angeles - the door to which is unchanged from the time it appeared in this film, right down to the door handles being the same!

Max Davidson - Dumb Daddies (1928)
The Plot
Max Davidson had a starring role in a series of comedy short films produced in the late 1920s by the Hal Roach Studios.
Dumb Daddies has Max carrying a mannequin in a sack through downtown Culver City. The unusual sight of a man carrying a sack that appears to have a body in it attracts the interest of the other pedestrians and soon there is a big crowd of people following him. A policeman notices just as the leg breaks out of the sack and a chase ensues.
A Time Capsule Of Culver City In 1928
Like many of the silent comedy short films made in the 1910s and 1920s, this film makes ample use of on location filming. The filmmakers likely chose downtown Culver City out of convenience (it was a half mile from the studio) and the "every town" look that Main Street provided. Every building seen in this Quick Preview Video is still standing today.
You can retrace Max's steps at this filming location - just don't carry a sack with a mannequin in it!
