Introduction
This month we head out on location in the Los Angeles area to look at filming location from four movies.
We start in 1938 with The Three Stooges in the historic Windsor Square neighborhood. Then we look at filming locations from three comedy short movies from the 1920s from Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang / The Little Rascals and Glenn Tryon with time-capsule quality views of Culver City plus the Palms and Westlake neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
The Three Stooges - Mutts To You (1938)
The Plot
The Stooges are running a dog grooming business and as they are making their rounds in the neighborhood, they spot a baby left on a front doorstep of one of the homes. Thinking the baby has been abandoned, they take the child and are soon being hunted by the authorities for kidnapping!
Where did The Three Stooges film on location for Mutts To You?
It's always great to see The Three Stooges out on location to film scenes for their comedy shorts and Mutts To You takes us to a very posh Los Angeles neighborhood.
They chose the 100 block of South Norton Avenue and the beautiful house at 111 South Norton Avenue in the Windsor Square neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Windsor Square is about 3 miles northwest of the Downtown Los Angeles core. The City of Los Angeles has designated Windsor Square as a historic preservation zone which means most of the original homes are still there, in great condition and the neighborhood looks exactly like it did when The Three Stooges filmed there in 1938.
The then and now movie location photo from Mutts To You above shows Curly pushing the Stooge's car past 111 South Norton Avenue. This 5 bedroom / 4 bath home was built in 1915, around the same time as many of the homes on the west side of the street. Besides some different landscaping, there haven't been any modifications to the exterior of the house. This filming location is definitely a "must visit" site!

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Love My Dog (1927)
The Plot
The local dog catchers are after the Gang's dogs, and the Gang come up with some interesting ways to disguise their pets.
The Los Angeles Filming Location
The silent Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies provide us with a wonderful time capsule of what the Los Angeles area looked like in the 1920s, due to all of the on location filming in so many of the series movies.
Like most of the films in the series, many of the scenes in Love My Dog were filmed around a 2 block radius of the intersection of Woodbine Street and Motor Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. If someone wanted to know, "Where did those Little Rascals kids live?" the answer would most certainly be "The Palms neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles."
The filming location then and now photo above shows those mean old dog catchers walking west on Woodbine Street between Vinton Avenue and Motor Avenue. What's really incredible about this scene is that those trees in the background on the left captured on film back in 1927 are still there, clearly visible in the "now" photo. With all the construction that has gone on in the neighborhood over the years, it's a miracle these trees have survived.

The Plot
Glenn Tryon is visiting Hollywoood on business and he witnesses a bank robbery, but mistakes it for a scene from a movie.
A Fascinating Time-Capsule Of 1920s Culver City
The Hal Roach Studios brought the world the films of Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang / The Little Rascals and Harold Lloyd, to name a few. Opened back in 1920 and located in Culver City, California, the studio would often use Main Street, just a few blocks away from the studio, as a filming location. Watching these movies today, we get fantastic views of Culver City in its early years. These films are as close as we can get to time travel.
The studio made the comedy short movie 45 Minutes From Hollywood starring Glenn Tryon in 1926, and many scenes from the movie were filmed on location on Main Street.
This filming location then and now photo above shows us all the shops on Main Street along with the six floor Culver Hotel - which opened just 2 years earlier - in the background.
Today, every building visible in the "then" photo from the movie still stands. The only difference between the two photos are the trees that now line Main Street and the change to parallel parking.

Laurel and Hardy - We Faw Down (1928)
The Plot
Laurel and Hardy sneak out on their wives to play poker with their friends, but on the way to the game, they run into two women and of course get into trouble with both their wives AND one of the woman's husband!
A Filming Location Laurel and Hardy Used Twice
The Laurel and Hardy comedy short movie We Faw Down filmed in downtown Culver City, California and also in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, a short distance from Westlake Park (now MacArthur Park).
The filming location then and now photo above is from the final scene of We Faw Down. Laurel and Hardy repeated this scene 10 years later in their feature-length movie Block-Heads.
You just might be wondering: Were the final scenes of We Faw Down and Block-Heads filmed at the same place? The answer is: Yes, both movies used the exact same filming location!
The building on the right is 2014 West 8th Street (built in 1924) and 807 South Westlake Avenue (built in 1923) is on the left. The buildings are unchanged but unfortunately the nicely landscaped area between the two buildings has been paved over for parking.
