Introduction
This month we're looking at four Los Angeles area filming locations from four comedy short movies spanning the years 1928 through 1935.
The Three Stooges kick things off in the upscale Larchmont neighborhood with their 1935 film Hoi Polloi. Then, we join the Our Gang / The Little Rascals kids on the Westside as they show off their new, homemade fire engine in the 1934 movie Hi'-Neighbor!.
Next up, we visit a Laurel and Hardy filming location that just barely escaped being demolished in the mid-20th century. It's still standing today and looking very much like it did when they filmed Their Purple Moment there in 1928.
The last stop on this month's filming locations tour is a busy intersection in the Palms neighborhood where Charley Chase makes life quite difficult for a traffic cop in the 1933 movie Midsummer Mush.
The Three Stooges - Hoi Polloi (1935)
The Plot
The Three Stooges are at work collecting trash (which appears to consist mainly of noisy cans!) when three professors notice the Stooges and their "lower class" behavior and bet they can turn the Stooges into perfect gentlemen.
Filming Location: Larchmont Village In Los Angeles In The 1930s
The filming location then and now photo shown above from this Three Stooges movie was shot on the 100 block of North Larchmont Blvd in Los Angeles.
Miraculously, this part of Los Angeles has stayed very much the same as it was almost a century ago. Most of the buildings seen in this then and now photo comparison still stand today. There is one major exception: the movie theater that used to be a 149 N. Larchmont. It was demolished in 1959.
On the mountain in the distance, you can just make out the Hollywood(land) sign.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Hi'-Neighbor! (1934)
The Plot
A new kid moves into the neighborhood. The Gang gives him a warm welcome but he gives them the cold shoulder. To make matters worse, he has a nice shiny fire engine (for two) and Wally's girlfriend takes an instant liking to it. Not to be outdone, the Gang builds their OWN fire engine and the rich kid challenges them to a race down a very steep hill.
A Little Rascals Filming Location Still Standing Today
In the then and now filming location photo comparison above, you can see the Gang and their fire engine pulling up in front of 3510 Glendon Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. Built in 1932, the house looks exactly the same today as it did when it was caputured on film almost a century ago.

Laurel and Hardy - Their Purple Moment (1928)
The Plot
Laurel and Hardy sneak out on their wives to have go to a nightclub for a fun night out on the town.
A Filming Location Almost Destroyed
The filming location used in this Laurel and Hardy movie, Their Purple Moment is in the West Adams district of Los Angeles at 1750 West 22nd Street. The home seen in the film still stands today and is now over 100 years old (built in 1923).
When the I-10 Santa Monica Freeway was built in the 1960s, the freeway planners decided to build directly across the street from this house. As a result, this historic film location came within 50 feet of being buried under the I-10 freeway! Fortunately, this entire block of beautiful old homes - some built as early as 1905 - are still here today.

Charley Chase - Midsummer Mush (1933)
The Plot
Scoutmaster Charley Chase is taking his scout troop out on a hike into the country but gets lost on the way. He asks a traffic cop for directions during which time he causes a massive traffic jam at the corner of Motor Avenue and Tabor Street in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.
An Often Used Intersection As Filming Location
This intersection has been very popular with filmmakers for over 100 years. It appears in several Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies from the 1920s (see Bouncing Babies), several other Charley Chase movies from the early and mid-1930s and even in a Charlie's Angels TV episode (see the members-only video for Target Angels) from the 1970s!
Unfortunately, as is too often the case in Los Angeles, no building stands forever even if it is a historic movie location. This sequence of photos above shows us the commercial building that occupied the northeast corner of Motor Avenue and Tabor Street as it was in 1933, in its last days in 2017, the site after the building had been demolished, and the modern apartment building that occupies the site today.
