Introduction
This month's filming locations tour starts out in the suburban Los Angeles area town of Culver City, in a real-world backyard used in the 1938 Our Gang / The Little Rascals comedy short Canned Fishing. Laurel and Hardy are up next with a scene filmed just a short distance away from their 1930 movie Hog Wild.
One of the most recognizable filming locations ever used is featured next, as we look at a scene from the original Star Trek TV series in the 1967 episode Arena.
Our tour of filming locations in the Los Angeles area finishes up on a street corner in the neighborhood of Whitley Heights from the movie Fast Work starring Charley Chase.
Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Canned Fishing (1938)
The Plot
Spanky and Alfalfa have come up with a plan to skip school for the day and go fishing, but Spanky's mom figures out the plan and she makes them stay home and look after Spanky's little brother Junior while she goes out shopping.
Filming Location: A Real Back Yard
This Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie was one of the last made at the Hal Roach Studios before production moved to MGM Studios. A large number of scenes for this film were shot at a real home's backyard at 9634 Farragut Drive and in the alley next to that home in Culver City, California. The house used as the filming location is still here today (though an addition was added at some point which takes up part of the backyard). And the alley along the side of the house which is used in the last scene of the movie survives as well. It even looks like the original 3 car garage in this then and now filming location photo comparison is still there.
Filming Location Time Capsule - Garbage Disposal In 1930s Los Angeles
The cement structure that Junior is in could easily be mistaken for a barbecue. It's not though. It's an incinerator and most homes in the first half of the 20th century in the Los Angeles area had these as their primary method of garbage disposal.
While not a problem when the area was sparsely populated in the early 1900s, as the population grew, these incinerators quickly became one of the primary causes of the choking air pollution that afflicted the area and by the 1950s, they were outlawed.

The Plot
Mr. Hardy is putting up a new radio antenna on the roof because Mrs. Hardy wants to listen to Japan! Things are going well... until Mr. Laurel stops by to "help."
Filming Location In The Heart Of Culver City
Several movie locations were used to film the runaway car scenes. In the filming location then and now photo above, we're looking at the 9900 block of Washington Blvd in Culver City, California. Much has changed since 1930, but the historic Culver Hotel is visible in both photos, seen in the distance just to the left of the ladder.

Star Trek - Arena (1967)
The Plot
This episode from Season 1 has the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise engaged in a battle with The Gorn - a lizard-like alien race. The battle is taking place in an area of space inhabited by beings who despise violence, so they take Captain Kirk and The Gorn Captain to a remote planet where they can settle their differences directly in a fight to the death.
A Historic Filming Location
The fight scenes between Kirk and the Gorn Captain were filmed at the iconic Vaszquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center, about a 45 minute drive north of downtown Los Angeles. This was (and continues to be) a very popular filming location not only for several Star Trek productions (Voyager, Picard and more), but also as a movie location for westerns and serials going back to the 1930s (and likely before).

Charley Chase - Fast Work (1930)
The Plot
Charley falls in love with a beautiful woman. Fans of Our Gang / The Little Rascals will immediately recognizer her - June Marlowe - best known as "Miss Crabtree." She tells Charley she won't go on a date with him unless he gets permission from her father first. Charley ends up meeting a lunatic who he mistakes for the woman's father and things start to get crazy!
A 1930 Filming Location That Is Unchanged Today
The movie location then and now photo above shows Charley after literally bumping into the lunatic at the corner of Whitley Avenue and Franklin Avenue in the Whitley Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The building, constructed in 1924, still looks in great shape today.
