Introduction
Join us this month as we cross the globe from London, England to Los Angeles, California!
We kick things off in London, tracking down the iconic street scenes featured in the classic 1982 music video for the Dexys Midnight Runners song Come On Eileen.
After that, we head west to LA to explore several historic filming locations of the 1927 Our Gang / The Little Rascals short Dog Heaven, comparing how these classic scenes look today against the original footage.
Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen (1982)
The Plot
Dexys Midnight Runners are hanging out in the neighborhood and lead singer Kevin Rowland tries to woo Eileen.
Eileen's Neighborhood: The Filming Locations
Dexys Midnight Runners song Come On Eileen was the band's biggest hit, reaching number one in many countries around the world in 1982 / 1983.
The music video filmed in 1982 in the South London neighborhood of Kennington. Brook Drive at Hayles Street and Brook Drive at Austral Street were the filming locations with additional scenes filmed at Hayles Street and Lamlash Street.
The above filming location then and now photo shows the band standing on the corner of Brook Drive and Austral Street. These days, the sidewalk has been extended into the street a few feet and there's also a small garden between the sidewalk and the street. Except for those changes, everything else is as it was in 1982. The neighborhood is a nice, quiet residential area and if you're in London, you should visit!

The Plot
An Our Gang / The Little Rascals film with a strange (for the series) plot: Joe has a new girlfriend and Pete the Pup and Joe don't get to hang out much anymore. This depresses Pete and he considers suicide!
A Historic Los Angeles Filming Location
Dog Heaven was filmed all over Los Angeles and this month we're spotlighting three filming locations then and now photos from this film.
In the filming location photo above we see Joe standing in front of his new girlfriend's house (3563 Motor Avenue in the Palms section of Los Angeles).
This house was seen in several films from the 1920s and 1930s and it also makes an appearance in a Charlie's Angels episode (my then and now look at that episode's filming locations is coming up in May of this year). 3563 Motor Avenue was one of the original homes in the area, built by the Tabor family in the very early 1900s. Tabor Street, just a few steps down Motor Avenue from the house, was named after the family. The Tabors retained ownership of the home until 2018, when it was sold to developers and demolished.
You can't tell it from the "now" photo, but what's being built on the site is a 7 floor apartment building that spans several lots. This sunny stretch of Motor Avenue is now a dark canyon - with the large new apartment building blocking most of the sunlight from the street.

The Plot
Towards the end of Dog Heaven, we see a girl pushed off a bridge into a lake by another dog. Pete jumps into the lake and swims to her rescue. But, Joe thinks PETE was the dog that had pushed the girl off the bridge and he scolds Pete for doing such a thing. Fortunately a man in a wheelchair saw the whole thing and explains to Joe that Pete SAVED the girl.
Two Filming Locations For One Scene
The production of his scene is somewhat of a mystery: It was filmed in two different parks. The girl being pushed off the bridge was filmed at the lake in Hollenbeck Park, across the Los Angeles river and just a short distance from Downtown Los Angeles.
The part of the scene where Pete rescues the girl from the lake, filmed at Westlake Park (today's MacArthur Park) about a mile west of Downtown Los Angeles. Why didn't they film the entire scene at Hollenbeck Park?
The decision to film the rescue part of the scene at Westlake / MacArthur gives us a look at the park in the days when it was a quite nice place. Today, I would not recommend visiting MacArthur park!

The Plot
Dog Heaven finishes up with the Gang looking for Pete around the neighborhood, and ultimately finding him and apparently he has decided NOT to commit suicide!
A Return To A Familiar Filming Location
This filming location then and now photo above shows the Gang at an often used filming location for the series, the alley between Motor Avenue and Vinton Avenue south of Woodbine Street in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.
This location appears in the 1927 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Love My Dog and again in their 1932 movie The Pooch.
