Introduction
Out on location this month with a visit to a royal palace in Honolulu, a morgue(!), some historic Los Angeles steps and the downtown core of Culver City, California.
We begin with the Hawaiian palace filming location used in the I Dream of Jeannie episode Battle of Waikiki from the show's 1968 season. Next, we're back in Los Angeles, taking a look at a filming location from the Laurel and Hardy 1927 comedy The Second 100 Years.
The journey continues with an Our Gang / The Little Rascals filming location in downtown Culver City used in their 1933 movie The Kid From Borneo.
The Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, a favorite backdrop for classic Hollywood comedies that needed long, steep stairways, is the filming location for the 1945 Edgar Kennedy comedy It's Your Move.
We finish up this month with a Charley Chase filming location, joining him on his wedding day in his silent comedy short Limousine Love from 1928.
I Dream of Jeannie - Battle of Waikiki (1968) - Part 2
The Plot
Jeannie, Major Nelson and Major Healey are at the historic Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hawaii. Major Nelson comments that he really wishes he could have met King Kamehameha, the great past ruler of Hawaii. Wished is the operative word here, Jeannie blinks and the King himself appears.
The Filming Location: Historic Iolani Palace
For this scene, the crew filmed on the southwest side of the Iolani Palace. The palace was opened in 1882 and it's the only royal palace in the United States.
Besides a fresh coat of white paint on the two columns and metal steps leading up to the palace entrance, everything looks exactly the same today as it was back when the episode Battle of Waikiki was filmed here in 1968.

Laurel and Hardy - The Second 100 Years (1927)
The Plot
Laurel and Hardy disguise themselves as painters to break out of jail. The above photo is from the scene in the movie where they walk off the jail grounds.
A Most Unusual Los Angeles Filming Location
The actual filming location wasn't a jail - it was the Marengo Street entrance to the Los Angeles County morgue! Behind that large tree today, the very large building visible in the background in 1927 is still there. And those concrete gate supports seen in the then and now photo above are the same.
This location was also used as a jail in another Laurel and Hardy movie two years later - The Hoose-Gow. Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The Kid From Borneo (1933)
The Plot
A carnival has come to town and Dickie and Spanky's Uncle George - who works at the carnival - has a message sent to their mom with an invitation for the kids to come down and visit. But when the Gang arrives at the carnival, they mistakenly think the "wild man from Borneo" is their Uncle George. Things go downhill quickly as the "wild man from Borneo" chases them through the streets of downtown Culver City, California.
A Visit To A Downtown Culver City Filming Location
The then and now filming location photo above is the north side of the 9300 block of Culver Blvd. This particular building, located at the northwest corner of Culver Blvd and Main Street is among the oldest in Culver City. It dates back to 1914 and is seen in countless other movies and TV episodes throughout the decades - many of them covered here on the site, including:

Charley Chase - Limousine Love (1928)
The Plot
Charley Chase is getting married (a plot he used in more than a few of his movies over the years!). As he is driving to the wedding venue, he discovers a scantily clad lady is hiding out in the back of the car!
Filming Location - The Culver Hotel
This movie revolves (literally) around the Culver Hotel in the heart of downtown Culver City, California, as Charley circles the block trying to figure out a way to get the woman out of the car.
In the then and now filming location photo above, we see The Culver Hotel viewed from the Culver Blvd side at Main Street. Thanks to a multi-million dollar restoration about 10 years ago, the hotel is looking just as good today as it did 98 years ago when Charley Chase and the film crew used it as a filming location for Limousine Love.

Edgar Kennedy - It's Your Move (1945)
The Plot
Edgar Kennedy and Jack Rice assume the Laurel and Hardy roles in this movie that was clearly inspired by the Laurel and Hardy movie The Music Box and probably a few other movies with a plot of "carrying a large object up a long flight of steps."
Los Angeles Filming Location - The Descanso Steps
This movie's filming location was the Descanso Steps in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles at 3200 Larissa Drive, very close to the Laurel and Hardy steps used in The Music Box. Just four years before It's Your Move was made, The Three Stooges filmed An Ache In Every Stake (available to current members here on the site) at a THIRD set of steep stairs in the area. In that movie, the bulky object being carried up the steps was a block of ice which kept melting by the time it arrived at the top of the steps!
