Two Historic Culver City Buildings

In this then and now comparison photo, we see two iconic Culver City buildings. Closest to the camera is the 1928 version of the City Hall building. And the tall building in the background is the landmark Culver Hotel, which opened in 1924. Of the two, only the Culver Hotel building has survived.

The City Hall building we see in the frame from the movie on the left lasted until the late-1990s, when it was demolished and a new City Hall was built in its place. As an homage to the old building which served Culver City for decades, a replica of the entrance facade of the 1928 City Hall was built in the exact spot as the original, as shown in the "now" photo on the right.

  • Culver City Residential Row: Captures a surrounding block of period homes in the 4000 and 4200 blocks of Lafayette Place that remain remarkably unaltered to this day.

Production & Preservation Note: Historically significant as the very first sound-era "talkie" entry in the Our Gang / The Little Rascals series, Small Talk filmed primarily on interior soundstages at Hal Roach Studios. The select outdoor sequences shot nearby preserve an essential visual record of Culver City's 1928 City Hall building and the Lafayette Place neighborhood in 1929.

The Plot

The Gang members are adopted by several wealthy families and cause havoc in their new surroundings.

The Filming Locations

This is the first "talking" Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie. While most of the movie was shot inside a soundstage at the Hal Roach Studios, there were several scenes filmed outdoors on location nearby in Culver City.

There's a great view of the (then) one-year-old City Hall building and the homes on Lafayette Place. Small Talk serves as an excellent time capsule of Culver City in 1929.
