Introduction
In this blog post, we explore the 1972 episode Hawaii Bound from the classic TV show The Brady Bunch with a tour of its real-world Honolulu filming spots. Next, we travel back to 1931 Los Angeles — when streetcars filled the city's thoroughfares — to examine the historic production sites from the Charley Chase comedy classic Hasty Marriage.

The Plot
The Brady Bunch heads to Honolulu, Hawaii for a vacation (though of course, Mike Brady is there for work on a project).
Honolulu - Where Other TV Series Have Gone Before
Back in the 1960s and '70s, some hit TV shows decided to set a few episodes in beautiful Honolulu. Taking a trip to the islands was a good way to break up the usual - and by then predictable - episode plots and and was a great way to show the characters in a new setting. I explored this practice a few months ago with the I Dream of Jeannie classic 1968 episode Battle of Waikiki.
The Brady Bunch followed suit a few years later with their iconic trip to paradise in 1972. The episode Hawaii Bound serves as a fascinating time capsule, bring us along on a tour of Honolulu and other parts of the island of Oahu.

The Brady Bunch continues their tour of Honolulu in 1972.
Honolulu As Filming Location
Our retrospective tour of 1972 Honolulu rolls on with part two of The Brady Bunch's classic episode, Hawaii Bound.
The local tourism board could not have asked for a better promo given how many real-world sights were packed into this episode. Highlighted locations include a sweeping vista of the city from the Tantalus Lookout inside Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Park, alongside scenic shots of Waikiki's rising skyline filmed right from Owls Beach at San Souci Park.

Charley Chase - Hasty Marriage (1931) - Part 1 of 2
The Plot
In the 1931 short Hasty Marriage, Charley Chase plays a man eager to win over his girlfriend’s skeptical mother.
Who Was Charley Chase?
As a key figure in American silent and sound comedy, Charley Chase spent the 1920s and '30s directing, writing, and performing in some of the era's most memorable shorts. He helped launch the Our Gang / Little Rascals franchise in 1922, starred in his own popular short films, and went on to direct The Three Stooges later in the 30s — earning him a well-deserved spot among classic Hollywood royalty.
When Streetcars Roamed Los Angeles
Featuring fan-favorite James Finlayson (a frequent staple of Laurel and Hardy films) as a streetcar operator, the production shot almost exclusively on location along a stretch of 2nd Avenue in Los Angeles. The film offers a fantastic look at the vintage Los Angeles Railway streetcars that once ran down 2nd Avenue, revealing why that corridor remains so wide today despite the tracks being long removed.

The Plot
Charley continues trying to impress his girlfriend's mother in law that he is a good suitor.
Filming Location: The Buildings Remain But It's Not The Same 1931 Neighborhood
Part two of my look at the filming locations for the Charley Chase movie Hasty Marriage brings us to the busy intersection of Second Avenue and West 54th Street in Los Angeles.
When this short was filmed in 1931, this corner served as a lively local hub, complete with a neighborhood market and a restaurant right across the street. Fast forward to the present day: while both original structures managed to survive into the 21st century, both look like they've seen much better days.
An Incredible Then And Now Comparison Of The Streetcar Era Vs Today
One of the standout moments in this then and now look at the filming locations is a wide shot looking north along Second Avenue. It offers an incredible view of the old streetcar tracks, overhead power cables, and vintage 1920s and early ’30s cars lining the curbs. Car and train enthusiasts are going to love taking in all the details from this era!
Together, these then and now visual comparisons paint a fascinating picture of how drastically this corner of Los Angeles has evolved over the last 95 years.
