Introduction
Hop on board the filming locations then and now time machine as we journey around the Los Angeles area during the years 1920 through 1936.
The first stop is a filming location in West Hollywood from the 1936 cult classic move Reefer Madness. Next, we head over to the Westside of LA and join the Our Gang / The Little Rascals kids for a then and now look at filming locations used in the 1932 comedy The Pooch.
Harold Lloyd takes us on a drive through the area in his new car in his 1920 comedy Get Out and Get Under. And the 1921 Charlie Chaplin movie The Idle Class gives us some remarkable views of the Pasadena train station and the Los Angeles River when it was still a river - and not the concrete lined flood control channel of today.
Reefer Madness (1936)
The Plot
The movie attempts to portray the evils of drugs to the youth of America.
West Hollywood Filming Location - Then and Now
Reefer Madness was filmed almost entirely at the historic (Mary) Pickford-(Douglas) Fairbanks Studios, which later became United Artists, then Samuel Goldwyn Studios and these days is simply named The Lot.
Made on a very low budget, the one scene shot on location was filmed on Santa Monica Blvd right outside of the studio!

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The Pooch (1932)
The Plot
The mean dog catcher has Stymie's dog Petey and Stymie needs to come up with $5 by the end of the day to pay for his release. Stymie's prayers are answered as a $5 bill floats down from the sky and lands in front of him.
The money, though, had blown out of a lady's hand as she was standing in front of a store just a short distance away. She summons an officer who then chases Stymie around the neighborhood trying to retrieve the $5 bill. Stymie evades the officer and the movie ends with Stymie and Petey reunited.
An Often Used Our Gang / The Little Rascals Filming Location
In this Quick Preview excerpt from the complete filming locations then and now documentary video for this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, we see a few of the locations used in the beginning of the chase scene. This particular sequence was filmed in the Palms neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles. Still very undeveloped in 1932, the area today has been completely built up.

The Plot
Harold is late for his performance in a play and the bulk of this movie takes us on his journey through the Los Angeles area of 1920 as he struggles to make his way to the theatre.
A Journey Back In Time To Los Angeles In 1920
The Hal Roach Studios produced this Harold Lloyd comedy short over 100 years ago and it provides us with great views of the Palms neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles, plus a rare view of what is today's Chinatown district.

The Plot
Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character visits an upscale golf resort.
Multiple Los Angeles Area Filming Locations - 1920 vs Today
There's a lot of filming on location in this one. The opening scene of the Tramp arriving on the train was filmed in Pasadena, California on the site of today's Del Mar light rail station. The golfing scenes were shot next to the Los Angeles river a few miles north of downtown Los Angeles and the park scenes were filmed at what is today's Will Rogers Memorial Park in Beverly Hills.
