Introduction
We'll start our look at four filming location then and now photos in the Atlanta suburb of Mableton for a scene from the Tyler Perry movie Madea Goes To Jail.
Then, we're off to the Los Angeles area with a look at a filming location used in the 1927 Laurel and Hardy comedy Love 'Em And Weep, followed by a scene from the 1930 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Teacher's Pet.
Our filming locations tour wraps up with a look at downtown Culver City from a time when streetcar tracks ran right down the middle of Culver Blvd, from the short comedy movie Bring 'Em Back A Wife from The Taxi Boys series.
Tyler Perry - Madea Goes To Jail (2009)
The Plot
Madea has anger-management issues, but in THIS scene, I think we can all agree she is more than justified in destroying a car!
Mableton, Georgia As Filming Location
The then and now photo above is from the famous parking lot scene from Madea Goes To Jail. In it, Madea takes revenge on a woman who steals her parking space (which, unbelievably, Madea was waiting patiently for!).
The movie location for this scene is a strip mall at 5590 Mableton Parkway SW in Mableton, Georgia, just a short distance from the Tyler Perry Studios. The anchor store is no longer a K-Mart and the facade of the former K-Mart store seen in the first part of the scene has been changed to reflect the new tenant, but the part of the mall shown at the end of the scene in the then and now photo above is basically unchanged.

The Plot
This Laurel and Hardy movie was made prior to the establishment of the two characters we normally associate with them as a team. The plot involves Laurel and James Finlayson trying to keep an old girlfriend of Finlayson's away from Finlayson's wife - without success!
Time Capsule: Los Angeles Apartment Building As Filming Location
The then and now photo above is from a scene early in the film in front of an apartment building at 610 South Kenmore Avenue in Los Angeles. Built in 1926, the building has been well maintained through the decades and today appears exactly as it was when it was a film location for this Laurel and Hardy movie back in 1927.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Teacher's Pet (1930)
The Plot
This Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, Teacher's Pet, is the best film in the series. The plot is simple: The kids have a new teacher, Miss Crabtree, and they try to sabotage her first day. Things backfire when they discover that Miss Crabtree is just as sweet as their previous teacher, Miss McGillicuddy.
Los Angeles Transportation Infrastructure Then And Now
The then and now filming location photo above shows Miss Crabtree dropping off Jackie Cooper (presumably) near the school. This filming location in 1930 at the intersection of Venice Blvd at La Cienega Blvd featured a large viaduct for the Pacific Electric Railway's Venice Short Line which ran down the middle of Venice Blvd all the way to Venice Beach. Back then, it was a very quick and efficient way to get to the beach from downtown Los Angeles. If you were to drive the same route today, it would take twice as long compared to 1930. So much for "progress."

The Taxi Boys - Bring 'Em Back A Wife (1933)
The Plot
Most of you have probably never heard of The Taxi Boys series of short comedy films made in the early 1930s, unless you've done a "deep dive" on this website where several of their movies are covered. The films featured many of the supporting actors from the Laurel and Hardy films and the Our Gang / Little Rascals movies, along with the same background tunes. No coincidence, as these films were all made by the Hal Roach Studios!
In Bring 'Em Back A Wife, Billy Gilbert needs to prove he is married in order to land a job, so he dresses up his friend Ben Blue in woman's clothes hoping to pass "her" off as his wife!
Filming Location As Time Capsule
The Taxi Boys films were notable not because they were particularly good (though some in the series were), but because they made extensive use of on location filming all around the Westside of Los Angeles. When viewing these films today, we are basically time traveling and seeing large parts of the area as they were prior to being developed into the housing developments and strip malls that we see in these parts of Los Angeles today.
The then and now film location photo above shows the Culver Hotel in downtown Culver City, California. Back in 1933, it was surrounded by busy streets. The street on the east (right) side of the hotel (Washington Blvd) has been rerouted and in its place today is a pedestrian mall.
